GIOACCHINO ROSSINI: Petite Messe Solennelle
Concert details
Rossini's great work of his old age, the Petite Messe Solennelle is anything but petite or solemn! It is normally performed in his version for two pianos and harmonium, but in 1867 he set this monumental Mass for full orchestra, and this is your chance to hear it in that rare version - the first NYC performance in recent memory! Bravura bel canto arias and polyphonic fugues combine with Rossini's joie de vivre for an exciting evening of music.

MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER: The Denial of St. Peter
GIACOMO CARISSIMI: Jephte
One of the earliest oratorios on record - Carissimi's Jephte - tells the dramatic tale of filial love and human sacrifice, concluding with one of choral music's most heartbreaking choruses. Charpentier's poignant Denial of St. Peter puts a French twist on the genre Carissimi initiated. And Couperin's intimate Tenebrae Lessons contain some of the most exquisite vocal writing of the French Baroque era. (Close Concert Details)

We celebrate Handel's 250th Anniversary with his virtuosic tour-de-force for choir, Dixit Dominus.
